Frank's Tip 6: Use a phone book and a band saw to provide
a lifetime worth of paper for touching off endmills etc.
Instead of paying big bucks for cigarette papers, I introduced my old recyclable phone book to Mr. Band Saw, and cut sections out at the spine. After snipping the cover and sticking it to my mill with a magnet, I have a ready supply of .002" papers for edge finding, etc.

Dave's Tip 5:
I was taught that the correct way to hold a file in a lathe, is left handed. With the handle in the left hand, and steadying the far end with the right. This avoids putting the right hand between the rotating chuck and the edge being filed, and also positions the operator out of line in case the file is caught by a chuck jaw. I've been filing left handed and have been lucky so far.

Archie's Tip 4: Attach an airline to the
base of your lathe tailstock to make it slide easier.
On larger lathes, the tailstocks may be so heavy and cover so much surface area as to make them difficult to move. This airline modification feeds air between the tailstock and the ways breaking the seal and provides a cushion of air that allows the tailstock to move more freely.
