ProShop Tip 17: Place a thin piece of shim stock between the shank of your live center and the tailstock taper to make final parallelism adjustments.

Adjusting the tailstock itself can be time consuming. A quick way to make final adjustments when trying to correct the last little bit of taper from a shaft you are cutting is to offset the live center with a strip of shim stock. The thickness of the shim should be approximately half the amount of the total taper of the shaft. If the shaft is tapering down towards the tailstock, you would insert the shim on the operators side to push the live center away from you and vice versa. Be sure to leave enough stock on the shaft for test cuts to find the exact thickness of shim you need.

ProShop Tip 16: Use metal banding material to hold parallels apart.
Banding material is relatively soft so it can be easily cut with tin snips and bent into a "V" shape to provide spring pressure to hold parallels apart. You can make various sizes to span a wide range of vise openings.
